BRAULIO CARRILLO - COSTA RICA

GENERAL INFORMATION The Braulio Carrillo National Park is the most extensive of the central region of Costa Rica. Its location is important for the protection of aquifer layers; in its interior are found most of the springs irrigating the Central Valley, area with the greatest concentration of population and economic resources of the country.

LOCATION Within its limits are found the Barva Volcano, and the Cacho Negro and Zurquì peaks. It contains two sectors: Quebrada Gonzàlez, next to the San Josè-Guàpiles road, and the Barva Volcano, located 4 km from Sacramento in Barva de Heredia. It is part of the Conservation Area of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range.

MAIN ATTRACTIONS The Park contains an evergreen forest vegetation, very dense and with a complex flora. Most of the park is covered by primary forest; it is estimated that there are 6.000 species of plants (data from InBio), representing half of the total species in all of the country. The Park also presents a great diversity of fauna. Among the mammals we can highlight the white-faced, and spider monkeys, tapir, puma and jaguar. It also has a rich avifauna, between the resident and the migratory it is.represented by almost 515 species of birds,

SERVICES OFFERED Information Booth. Written information and the main one of the park guards on the stations at Quebrada Gonzàlez and Barva volcano. Look-outs. There are small look-outs located on the trails of Las Palmas and Botarrama on the Quebrada Gonzàlez sector and Vara Blanca and Barva Lagoon trails of the Barva Volcano sector. Camping Area. Barva Volcano Sector, capacity for 10 tents. Restrooms, showers, lavatory, tables, non potable water and wash sinks. Lunch Area. In Quebrada Gonzàlez and Barva Volcano Quebrada Gonzàlez, with parking area for 10 vehicles and 2 buses. The Barva Volcano does not have a parking area; parking is found at the side of the access road.. Lectures. Quebrada Gonzàlez with a prior appointment via radio communication.

ACCESS Two official routes: Quebrada Gonzàlez and Barva Volcano. Quebrada Gonzàlez: 42 kilometers from San Josè, route 32 on the San Josè-Guàpiles road. 2 km east, bridge over Sucio River. Caution on rainy days. Barva Volcano: Central county of Heredia and the communities of Barva of Heredia, San Josè de la Montaña, Sacramento. The distance to travel from San Josè is approximately 35 kilometers. The road of access is suitable for any vehicle up to the community of Sacramento. The last 4 kilometers you should drive an all-terrain vehicle.

REGULATIONS The National Parks were created to preserve natural and cultural resources; the removal of any animal, plant, rock, or other item from the area is not permitted. If you need help or information, contact the park staff. They will be ready and willing to help. For your own safety stay on marked trails in the public use areas. Help keep the park clean. Deposit trash in its respective bin (cans and glass, plastic, organic).
